Climate change

climate change

Climate change presents risks to humanity, our environment and our livelihoods. Changes in climate not only affect global food security but also impact our raw material supply. This influences our ability to make food people love and deliver value to our shareholders.

Science-based goal: Less than 5 percent of our greenhouse gas footprint is from our own operations, so we’ve set a goal to look beyond our walls - from farm to fork to landfill - and reduce absolute GHG emissions across our full value chain by 30 percent by 2030 (compared to 2020). Our longer-term goal is to achieve net zero emission levels by 2050. The absolute greenhouse gas commitment was calculated using methodologies approved by the Science Based Target Initiative (SBTi) that model a level of emission reductions that science suggests is necessary to sustain the health of the planet. General Mills was the first company to publish a full value chain goal approved by the SBTi in 2015.

2030 goal: Reduce absolute GHG emissions across our full value chain by 30 percent.

2050 goal: Reduce absolute GHG emissions across our full value chain to sustainable levels in line with scientific consensus.

In 2020, our GHG emissions footprint decreased 16% compared to 2010.

  • Collaboration: Since we directly control only a small portion of our value chain, driving transformation across the entire system requires leadership and collaboration with suppliers, farmers, packaging producers, product transport providers, retailers and consumers. Learn more >>
  • Climate policy: Our General Mills Policy on Climate, which focuses on mitigation, adaptation, disclosure and advocacy, establishes a framework to track and reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions across our value chain.
